Curcuma longa or turmeric has been extensively studied for its diverse pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cardioprotective activities. Taxonomically, Curcuma longa exhibits intraspecies polymorphism and geographical subgroups, impacting its cultivation practices and geographic distribution, thereby influencing rhizome yield and disease resistance. Understanding these factors is crucial for agricultural sustainability and environmental impact assessment. Chemically, turmeric comprises a rich array of phytochemicals, including curcuminoids, volatile oils, and other compounds, contributing to its diverse pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer antimicrobial as well as skin healing, neuroprotective and cardioprotective effects. Being rich in carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and essential micronutrients like copper, iron, manganese, and zinc, the medicinal properties of Curcuma longa extend to a wide range of therapeutic effects. Compounds like curcumin, bisacurone, and turmeronols modulate inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, suppressing NF-κB signaling pathway, and mitigating neuroinflammation associated with various diseases. Curcumin acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative stress. This protective effect has been shown to fight against cancer development linked to oxidative stress and to safeguard against neurodegenerative diseases. The chapter explores the diverse pharmacological and nutritional properties of Curcuma longa (turmeric), highlighting its potential as a valuable natural remedy and dietary supplement for applications in both medicine and the nutraceutical industry.
