The Importance of Alternative Materials to PVC and Effective Plastic Waste Management Strategies for a Better Future

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a popular synthetic plastic polymer that is employed in a variety of applications, from building and construction to healthcare products. However, the production and disposal of PVC can have significant negative impacts on human health and the environment. As a result, the need to investigate alternate materials is expanding to PVC that are more sustainable. PVC contains a variety of toxic chemicals, including phthalates and dioxins, which can have negative impacts on human health and the environment. These chemicals can leach out of PVC products over time and can contaminate soil and water. PVC is difficult to recycle due to its complex chemical makeup and lack of established recycling infrastructure. As a result, most PVC products end up in landfills or incinerators, where they can release harmful chemicals into the air and soil. In this research, numerous strategies have been proposed to tackle these challenges, including exploring alternative materials, implementing PVC product recycling initiatives, and embracing cleaner production technologies. Governments, industry, and consumers all have a role to play in reducing the negative impacts of PVC on health, the environment, and in the manufacturing process. This research focuses on the limitations of PVC material for a variety of applications and its sustainable alternatives.
