Methods of Antibiotic Discovery

Antibiotic discovery has relied on a diverse variety of methods: traditional culturing methods, which involve the creation of zones of inhibition on solid media, chemical modification of natural antibiotics, and high-throughput screening, involving the automates testing of thousands of molecules to find “hits” or “leads.” Newer methods and concepts such as computer-aided drug design and drug rediscovery are also discussed.
