Role of Enzymes in Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition marked by a steady loss of dopaminergic neurons in the brain’s substantia nigra. Although the precise origin of PD is still unknown, new research indicates that enzymes are important in the pathophysiology of this crippling illness. We will examine several enzymes linked to PD and how they affect the course of the illness in this chapter. We will discuss the misregulation of enzymes related to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, protein aggregation, and dopamine metabolism. Knowing how enzymes function in PD might help create new therapy approaches that target these enzymatic pathways.
