Role of Enzymes in Alzheimer’s Disease

This chapter aims to explain the important roles that specific enzymes play in the etiology of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Emphasis is placed on enzymes such as beta-secretase 1, gamma-secretase, and insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE), which significantly contribute to the formation of hallmark pathological features of AD—the amyloid beta plaques and Tau protein aggregates. Furthermore, this chapter critically evaluates the latest advancements in the study of enzyme inhibitors as potential therapeutic agents. It underscores the promise they hold in decelerating or even halting the progression of AD while simultaneously addressing the challenges encountered in the design and development of such inhibitors. By delving into the complexity of enzyme function and their manipulation, this chapter enriches our ongoing discourse on the exploration of promising treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. The aim is not only to deepen our understanding of the biochemical underpinnings of AD but also to highlight the potential of targeted enzyme intervention as a novel approach in the fight against this debilitating disease.
