Navigating the Landscape: Understanding Stroke Epidemiology

Stroke represents a significant global health challenge, ranking as the second-leading cause of mortality worldwide and the third-leading cause of death and disability combined. This chapter comprehensively overviews stroke epidemiology, risk factors, implications, and future perspectives. The incidence of strokes has surged dramatically over recent decades, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), posing profound implications for global health demographics. Understanding stroke epidemiology is crucial in addressing this public health burden, allowing for the design of targeted interventions and resource allocation. Stroke risk factors can be categorised as modifiable and non-modifiable, encompassing age, gender, genetics, lifestyle, medical conditions, and environment. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, smoking, and air pollution emerge as key modifiable risk factors significantly influencing stroke occurrence. Stroke presents various subtypes, including ischemic stroke, haemorrhagic stroke, transient ischemic attacks (TIA), and cryptogenic strokes, each with distinct characteristics and implications. Effective stroke management involves both immediate treatment, such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy, and long-term rehabilitation and secondary prevention strategies. Global health disparities contribute to variations in stroke incidence and outcomes, with LMICs facing increasing stroke risk correlated with socioeconomic shifts. Access to quality medical care and awareness of stroke prevention play pivotal roles in reducing these disparities. Stroke prevention and therapeutic strategies rely on multidisciplinary collaboration and innovative approaches, such as artificial intelligence (AI) for precision medicine and advancements in stem cell technologies and genomics for regenerative therapy. Addressing challenges in stroke research, including data quality and accessibility to care, will be essential for improving stroke management globally. In conclusion, a comprehensive understanding of stroke epidemiology, risk factors, and implications is essential for effective prevention, treatment, and management, ultimately reducing the burden of stroke on individuals, healthcare systems, and societies worldwide.
