A Sustainable Production Inventory Model for Perishable Products Under the Markdown Approach and Carbon Emission Reduction Investments

In the proposed chapter, we developed an environmentally conscious inventory model for a producer who produces and marketplaces fresh products using the markdown strategy. Products whose condition progressively deteriorates at a constant pace over time and products whose freshness quality deteriorates over time are two different types of product deterioration to take into account. The demand for a product is influenced by factors such as its selling price, level of freshness, and advertising campaigns. The markdown strategy was implemented to enhance demand and maximize profit by releasing stocks at the end of their useful lives. On other hand, the carbon emissions from industries due to different activities and controlling carbon emission is one of the parts of inventory management. The study aims to determine the optimal period for replenishment cycles, the optimal value for green investments, and the optimum markdown percentages that will maximize the producer’s total profit. Three cases are discussed as, (i) producer’s total profit under markdown approach, (ii) producer’s total profit under markdown approach and carbon emissions from production set up, from production process, from deterioration of products and during holing inventory with carbon tax, and (iii) producer’s total profit under markdown approach with carbon emissions and green investments. A mathematical formulation that represents real-world situations is validated through the use of numerical examples. To ascertain the reliability of the model, a sensitivity analysis of the parameters has been carried out. After presenting some noteworthy managerial findings, the chapter considers the future directions of this field of study.
