Measuring Empowerment

A major focus of this study is the relationship between empowerment and intimate partner violence (IPV). Now empowerment is a complex multidimensional concept. Further, literature refers to autonomy, agency, and empowerment. It is necessary to distinguish between these concepts. In this chapter we start by defining what we mean by empowerment, and describe how empowerment is captured and measured. The analysis uses the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey (undertaken in 2019–2021). A Structural Equation Model is used to measure empowerment and identify its determinants. Regional variations in empowerment are also discussed.
