Environmental Sustainability and Its Impact on Public Health in Ladakh-India

Nestled in the northern part of India, Ladakh is renowned for its unique geography and cultural heritage. However, the region's fragile ecosystem faces sustainability challenges stemming from societal, geopolitical, climatic, and economic changes, ultimately impacting public health. The chapter provides an outline of the significance of environmental sustainability and its interconnectedness with public health in Ladakh. Examining Ladakh's environmental landscape, including temperature, precipitation, biodiversity, water resources, and glaciers, the chapter highlights the intricate relationship between the environment and public health. Key environmental challenges, such as water scarcity, climate change, waste management, and the impact of the tourism industry, are discussed, recognizing their direct or indirect influence on health outcomes. The prevalence of acute respiratory infections and acute diarrheal diseases in Ladakh is also addressed, identifying factors like indoor air pollution and inadequate sanitation facilities that contribute to these health risks. Moreover, the rapid urbanization of Ladakh's main towns, accompanied by increased tourism, has led to water consumption challenges and inadequate waste management practices.
