Climate Change and Desert Dust Storms Induced Public Health Impacts on Rural Inhabitants of Western India

摘要

This systematic and statistically grounded review addresses the understudied nexus between desert dust storms and public health in arid regions, with a focal point on the Thar Desert in India. The study leverages an extensive analysis of over 100 recent articles to elucidate the complex interplay between airborne particulate matter from dust storms and its potential health impacts. Notably, the investigation reveals a glaring research gap concerning the specific diseases prevalent in the Thar Desert region, where the absence of evidence connecting dust storms to severe health outcomes like Tuberculosis, Silicosis, and Pulmonary-related disorders is striking. The review's scientific significance stems from its comprehensive global scope, meticulously assessing the health consequences of desert dust storms. By aligning critical literature findings with the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data inventory, the study identifies a strong correlation between dust storms and the exacerbation of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The inhalation of fine particles, specifically PM10 and PM2.5, emerges as a prominent factor contributing to diseases like Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Valley fever, and Chronic Pulmonary disorders in the Thar Desert. To enhance the scientific credibility of the findings, the study highlights the importance of experimental investigations to unravel the mechanistic underpinnings of the identified health associations. This research not only bridges a critical gap in understanding the health impacts of global desert dust storms but also provides valuable insights for formulating targeted preventive measures. The study underscores the imperative of acknowledging the health risks posed by dust storms, especially in regions like the Thar Desert, to ensure the well-being of vulnerable populations.
