Vibriosis in Aquaculture: Pathogenic Vibrio Species, Affected Animals, Diagnosis and Adverse Effects

Various species of economically significant cultured marine animals have been infected by vibriosis for more than a decade. Although knowledge regarding the bacterial disease of many species of cultured fish in the global community is still lacking, it has shown some improvement in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in aquaculture. This review focuses on species of pathogens, animals affected and adverse effects while discovering the impacts of vibriosis in aquaculture that have driven serious economic losses to aquaculture farmers worldwide. Many Vibrio species foster severe human diseases with significant levels of antibiotic resistance that can be found in estuaries around the world. Between 1996 and 2005, the average annual incidence of all Vibrio infections increased by 41%. Vibrio vulnificus (Vv), a shellfish-associated species found in the Southeast of the United States, requires temperature (16–33 °C) and salinity (5–20 ppt) for optimal growth. In addition, a comprehensive study on vibriosis is one of the initiatives aimed at strengthening the capacity of countries to conduct assessments of the burden of food-borne disease and encouraging them to use the burden of food-borne disease estimates for cost-effectiveness analyses of prevention, intervention and control measures, particularly in many Asian countries with a tropical climate.
