Secondary Development of a College English Textbook Based on Online Learning

The secondary development of teaching materials refers to the process of teachers redesigning and improving the learning of teaching materials according to specific teaching objectives, methods, content, and evaluations during the materials’ actual use. In recent years, Chinese college English teachers have gradually paid increasing attention to the secondary development and practical research of college English teaching materials when applying them under online learning platforms. This study took the textbook New Horizons College English 3 published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) in China as an example to explore the secondary development of teaching materials under FLTRP’s learning platform. Three-level learning objectives were set according to the College English Teaching Guide (2020). Then, a design and practice model for the secondary development of learning materials in teaching materials was built, which comprised the development of thematic video materials, application and expansion of inquiring vocabulary, pre- and in-depth development of exploratory and interactive text learning materials, and development of special listening and speaking materials. The model’s aim is to help teachers to conduct in-depth secondary development of teaching materials and to provide a theoretical and practical basis for said development.
