Corrosion Behavior of Banana Peel-Based Epoxy Polymer Composite Under Different Weight Solutions of NaOH and NaCl Solution

This research explored the process of transforming banana peels into nano-sized filler particles used as a reinforcement for polymeric composite and measured the durability in corrosive environment. The composites were fabricated by varying the weight percentages of banana fillers (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10wt%) with epoxy matrix using hand lay-up molding process and measured electrochemical corrosion behavior. The corrosion rate of fabricated composites was investigated in 5% NaOH solution and 3.5% NaCl solution environments over a duration of 24–48 h. The results indicated that the samples with NaCl solutions observed more corrosive compared to NaOH solution. Additionally, it was also observed that the corrosion behavior increased with higher additions of banana fillers due to hydrophilic nature of fillers. SEM micrographs facilitated the detection of the deterioration of the filler-matrix interface caused by corrosive environment.
