PDP Attributes for Leveraging Product Quality: ISM and SEM-Based Approach

Product development process (PDP) and its analogous attributes are inevitable for developing high-quality products. Technological changes in PDP encourage to introduce new products leading toward innovation. This study deals with the attributes associated with PDP, namely market analysis, product feature, collaboration and modular product design (MPD) influencing the new product development (NPD) in manufacturing industries. It also develops the structural model inferring the impact of these PDP attributes for better product quality. The hierarchical framework depicting the levels of PDP attributes has been developed by adopting interpretive structural modeling (ISM)-based framework. This uses the primary data accumulated from experts of Indian manufacturing companies. The developed reachability matrix in ISM framework represents the priorities of these factors as market analysis is the most important one followed by collaboration, modular product design, PDP and product feature. Level partitioning has also been employed for hierarchical structure formation which implies PDP and product feature in level 1, followed by modular product design, collaboration and market analysis in levels 2, 3 and 4 successively. Cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) analysis has been applied to cluster these attributes for based on their importance in manufacturing sector. Structural equation modeling (SEM) approach has been applied to form the framework depicting the impact of PDP attributes on new product quality. The results interpret that each factor such as PDP, market analysis, product feature, collaboration and MPD have positive impact on new product quality which accordingly escalates NPD performance in turn the NPD success.
