Electroless coatings is deposited on AISI 1040 medium carbon steel. The coatings bath is free of lead due to its toxicity. The corrosion resistance of electroless Ni–B, Ni–B–W, Ni–B–Mo, and Ni–B–W–Mo coatings is examined in 3.5% NaCl solution. Nobler corrosion potential was found (− 374 mV) for Ni–B–W–Mo coatings. This is due to compact surface morphology which leads to a lower susceptibility to corrosion on surface. The corrosion mechanism of all variants of coatings was also investigated.
