Understanding Climate Risks in the Adriatic Basin

The EU has shifted its disaster approach, recognizing cross-border challenges. Collaborative strategies are essential due to escalating economic losses from climate-related events. The Adriatic Basin, spanning six countries and hub for cultural and economic exchange, is a key area requiring a cross-border perspective. Geological, climatic, and anthropogenic factors pose shared risks, necessitating coordinated efforts. Ongoing processes in the Adriatic area, such as warming and environmental degradation, increase societal exposure. Overcoming linguistic and procedural barriers, a macro-regional approach is crucial for harmonizing adaptation strategies and fostering interregional cooperation in Disaster Risk Reduction. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of the European Union evolving approach to climate risks, emphasizing cross-border cooperation, and highlighting the unique or shared challenges in the vulnerable Adriatic Basin.
