Construction on soft clay is a great challenge in geotechnical engineering field due to low strength, high volumetric deformation during seasonal variations, and high compressibility characteristics. Chemical stabilization of soft clay using conventional binders such as lime and cement is a well-known ground improvement technique. However, they create great concern due to the carbon emission during their production. This necessitated the development of sustainable binders for ground improvement applications. In the present study, the application of eggshell, a waste from food processing industry is effectively utilized for the stabilization of soft clay at Palakkad, Kerala. The experimental investigation includes micro structural analysis, unconfined compression tests, and tests for plasticity and swelling characteristics. The influence of curing on strength enhancement was also studied. It was observed that the undrained strength was increased by 3 times when the soft clay was stabilized with the sustainable binder at the selected proportion.

摘要
