Numerical Analysis of Pile Groups Subjected to Combined Loading
摘要
Pile foundations for numerous types of infrastructure are often consigned to combination of axial and horizontal loadings. In typical design methods, the vertical and lateral responses of piles are often estimated separately left behind their probable interrelation, as this may provoke faulty design. There are some contradictory findings, on whether the presence of axial load on pile increases or decreases horizontal in displacements under corresponding lateral loads. In the present research, the ultimate lateral capacities of groups of piles in the presence of vertical load with magnitudes of 0.25 QUV, 0.50 QUV, 0.75 QUV, QUV are determined by performing numerical analysis using MIDAS GTS NX in clayey, sandy, and c-φ type of soil. The percentage decrease/ increase in lateral capacities due to the application of vertical loads was then determined by comparing them with the ultimate horizontal capacities of group of piles without any vertical load. The results showed that in instance of clay and c-φ soil, lateral capacities decline due to the presence of axial load whereas, as long as in sand, lateral capacities are increased. Also, in case of clay and c-φ soil, the horizontal response due to combination of axial and horizontal load is dependent on length to diameter ratio of pile.
