This study discusses the problems pertaining to soil retention in an ongoing highway interchange project at Chandani Chowk, NH48, Pune. The inadequacy of traditional soil retention systems for the project and their demerits have been discussed. It further presents how Graviloft™ retaining wall provided the necessary solution and the merits in this technology. Considering the space limitations, the Graviloft™ retaining wall was proposed as the most efficient solution. The Graviloft™ retaining wall is a patented innovative technology for earth retention by providing a loft to cause discontinuation in the shear failure plane in the backfill soil. The redistribution of earth pressure thereby the reduction in lateral thrust optimizes the overall design in terms of cost, space, and time. This case study discusses the implementation of Graviloft™ retaining wall for the Chandani Chowk Interchange project. The infrastructure under consideration is located on the NH48 connecting major cities: Mumbai and Bangalore as it passes through the city of Pune. The highway is a part of Mumbai-Chennai section of the Golden Quadrilateral. The proposed project includes widening of the existing four lane road to six lanes at an underpass. The renovation was planned to be implemented without disturbing the existing pavement and connectivity. Traditional walls such as RE wall and RCC wall require substantial intrusion into the backfill, hence constructing such walls within the available base width while accommodating the national highway traffic flow was impractical.

摘要
