This chapter provides an overview of environmental sustainability and resilience, exploring policies and practices across multiple dimensions of these two concepts. It examines the urgent societal challenges threatening our planet, including resource depletion, climate change, and social inequalities. The chapter is structured in three parts based on the contents of the edited volume: social-ecological underpinnings of environmental sustainability, technology and innovation for sustainable and resilient development, and sustainable development and higher education institutions. Key topics covered include climate activism, ecosystem services, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, innovative water management technologies, and novel urban ecosystems. The chapter highlights the importance of interdisciplinary approaches, technological innovation, and community engagement in addressing sustainability challenges. It emphasizes the critical role of education in shaping a sustainable future, showcasing innovative teaching methods, and the integration of sustainability concepts into curricula. The concluding section outlines key strategies for reorienting policies and practices towards sustainability and resilience. These strategies encompass interdisciplinary collaboration, harnessing technological innovation, strengthening education, promoting nature-based solutions, and enhancing international cooperation.
