Soil, Water, and Crop Management Practices to Mitigate Greenhouse Gases Emission

The escalating concerns about climate change and its impact on global ecosystems have prompted a necessary analysis of agricultural practices, which are significant emitters of greenhouse gases (GHG). Effective soil management strategies hold massive potential in sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2) from the environment and lowering methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Sustainable soil conservation techniques, such as crop residue retention, cover cropping, conservation tillage, and organic amendments, can improve soil carbon stocks and decrease soil erosion and nutrient losses. By boosting soil health, these practices foster a resilient agricultural system capable of withstanding climate-induced challenges while mitigating GHG emissions. Water management is vital in GHG emission mitigation by lowering waterlogged conditions that lead to anaerobic environments responsible for substantial CH4 emissions. By promoting the adoption of nitrogen-efficient fertilization techniques, such as precision farming and the use of controlled-release fertilizers, N2O emissions can be curtailed. Also, crop diversification and rotational practices can enhance nutrient cycling, decreasing the need for synthetic fertilizers and reducing GHG emissions. Integrating these soil, water, and crop management practices holistically and adaptively can lead to sustainable agricultural systems with lower GHG emissions. Nevertheless, successful implementation depends on overcoming socioeconomic barriers, enhancing awareness and education, and incentivizing farmers to adopt climate-smart practices. Policymakers, scientists, and stakeholders must collaborate to develop practical policies and support tools that promote the widespread adoption of these mitigation strategies to address the challenges associated with climate change in agriculture. This chapter reviews the significant role of soil, water, and crop management practices in mitigating GHG emissions from farming or agricultural operations.
