Interannual Climate Variability and Its Impacts on Major Crop Productivity

This chapter explores the intricate link between interannual climate variability and its profound impact on staple crop production in Bangladesh. Observed trends like rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and increasing sea levels paint a concerning picture. Climate modeling forecasts further solidify these anxieties, highlighting potential temperature spikes and precipitation fluctuations based on emission scenarios. To combat this looming threat, the chapter emphasizes the urgency of climate change mitigation strategies. The core analysis investigates how key climate parameters like temperature, precipitation, humidity, and extreme weather events affect crops like rice, wheat, and maize. It unveils their vulnerability to these fluctuating conditions. Furthermore, the chapter examines the influence of major climate indices (ENSO, NAO, IOD) on Bangladesh’s agricultural output. In response to these challenges, a comprehensive strategy is proposed to safeguard food security. This strategy advocates for crop diversification, promoting climate-resilient varieties, advancements in water management, robust weather forecasting, and supportive government policies. By implementing these multifaceted solutions, Bangladesh can bolster agricultural resilience and ensure long-term food security in a changing climate.
