Policy, Legalisation and Programs Related to Substance Use Disorders in South Asia

This chapter examines the complex landscape of drug use and policies in South Asia, highlighting the historical context of narcotics use, the current drug use burden, and the effectiveness of policies and programs in combating these challenges. It discusses the transition of policies towards a more liberal approach, evaluates the implementation of alcohol and tobacco policies, and assesses the strategies against narcotics and psychotropics. A review of existing legal frameworks, supply and demand reduction measures, and the potential for legalisation drawing on data from various South Asian countries is discussed. There is a need for more effective collaboration of various stakeholders, judicial cooperation, demand reduction strategies, and a balanced approach to harm and supply reduction.
