摘要

The South Asian region is characterized by a dynamic scenario of substance use disorders (SUDs), influenced by a complex interplay of cultural, socio-economic, and historical factors. Despite inherent challenges in data acquisition, trends underscore significant prevalence rates of diverse substances like tobacco, alcohol, and opioids across nations such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Tobacco use remains a pressing public health issue, notably witnessing a surge in smokeless forms. Rising alcohol consumption, notwithstanding cultural nuances, poses escalating concerns, particularly among the youth, carrying implications for health outcomes and economic burdens. Opioid misuse, although widespread, encounters divergent levels of policy response and treatment access. Cannabis is the predominant illicit substance. Country-specific data delineate varied patterns of cannabis and stimulant usage, with cultural, socio-economic, and geographical dynamics exerting significant influence. Noteworthy challenges encompass limited standardization of data collection methodologies and accessibility to treatment. Besides concerted endeavors such as national surveys, effective prevention, and treatment necessitate collaborative efforts between local and global stakeholders. Addressing SUDs mandates holistic strategies considering the youthful demographic, socio-economic disparities, and other contextual nuances. Sustained research initiatives and active engagement of stakeholders are imperative for tailoring interventions to the evolving landscape of substance use in the region.
