It is important to note that the psychological impact of COVID-19 on children varied based on individual circumstances, developmental stage, and health conditions. This study explored the psychosocial well-being of children left behind due to parental migration during COVID-19. Data was collected qualitatively from 15 children in Southern Wollo, Ethiopia, whose parents had migrated overseas. The findings demonstrated that Children left behind due to the migration of parents experienced feelings of abandonment, anxiety, hopelessness, and depression. COVID-19 coupled with parental separation due to migration has had a double burden that intensifies, fear, distress, and related psychological problems of children left behind. It has been also found out that the pandemic was a unique set of challenges for the left-behind children. Homestay restrictions for left-behind children exposed them to miss their friends in school and other activities that served as coping mechanisms for their parental absence. To mitigate these impacts, organizations like IGAD and other stakeholders need to design and provide comprehensive support systems for children left behind. In case of pandemics such COVID-19, various forms of support for children who became vulnerable to psychosocial problems have to be provided.
