Introduction

This chapter begins by exploring why we need a distinct South Asian identity, especially for the region’s epistemic community. It argues that discussing the futures of borders and geopolitics requires an understanding of the conceptual maze and theoretical debates. We look for an eclectic approach rather than a singular narrative. This is evident in a wide range of issues covered in the volume with a strong empirical basis. Our search for a distinct South Asian discourse of borders and geopolitics has resulted in theory-driven and policy-relevant analysis from six country cases: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. This chapter concludes with a discussion of key findings in three overlapping themes focusing on competing theories, an interplay of regional and extra-regional players, and emerging issues.
