Biochar as Catalyst

Biochar is a carbon-rich material fabricated from several organic waste feedstocks including municipal solid waste and agriculture waste by using pyrolysis or gasification. Easy availability and unique structures with multiple functional groups make biochar a prospective candidate for use as a catalyst or catalyst support in catalytic reactions such as biodiesel production, tar reduction and biomass hydrolysis. Hence, to render comprehensive information on the catalytic activity of biochar in the area of catalysis, this chapter emphasizes the catalytic challenges and practices of biochar. This chapter also gives an exhaustive assessment of the catalytic properties of biochar with respect to the fabrication method at the fundamental level. Lastly, the execution of various biochar catalysts is also estimated in this chapter.
