Biochar-Based Catalysts for Electrochemical Utilization

Biochar-based materials exhibit spectacular and unique physicochemical/electrocatalytic properties along with very much cost-effectiveness and environment friendly behaviour. In the last two decades, an increase has been witnessed in the research orientation towards the improvement of intrinsic physicochemical and electrochemical properties of biochar-based materials through the development of different treatment methods. This chapter, entitled “BIOCHAR-BASED CATALYSTS FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL UTILIZATION,” provides an insight into how advanced nanostructured materials and their composites bring astonishing improvements in the healthcare field. This chapter covers the origin, features, treatment, and application of biochar-based materials in various electrocatalytic behaviour. It covers the different methods of treating the biochar so as to improve their properties for subsequent application in electrochemical phenomena. The editors thoroughly planned the contents keeping in view the recent electrochemical utilization related to this emerging material. The chapter is contributed by the research professionals working in the respective areas and efforts have been made to deliver vast technical knowledge on the selected topic in a very comprehensive way. The use of biochar in recent advancements like electrochemical water splitting, rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, oxygen evolution/reduction reactions, and fuel cells has also been incorporated. This chapter is equipped to understand the fundamentals behind the excellent properties, synthesis routes, and electrochemical interactions related to biochar-based materials. The authors firmly believe that this chapter will serve as an ideal platform for different stakeholders including students, researchers, and academicians.
