There is a need for in vitro reconstruction of functional living tissues as transplantable grafts for regenerative medicine and as an alternative to animal pharmacokinetic models (Pampaloni et al. in Nat Rev Mol Cell Bio 8:839–845, 2007;Passier et al. in Cell Stem Cell 18:309–321, 2016).
