Navigating the Tension in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Growing Populations and Shrinking Higher Education Programs in Southern African Countries

Southern African countries face a dichotomy between growing populations and shrinking university programs due to infrastructure and financial obstacles. The literature review reveals the complex relationship between these opposing forces and their impact on higher education. While socio-economic drivers increase populations, demanding expanded educational access, universities face insufficient infrastructure, budgets, and faculty, reducing program capacity. Proposed solutions emphasize investments in infrastructure, diversified funding, strengthened collaborations, and blended/e-learning to address the mismatch between demographics and university capacity.
