In this chapter, we introduce our bidirectional programming framework, called BIRDS, for view update in relational databases. The framework supports the most common syntax of the Datalog language to programmers for writing their own view update strategies. BIRDS provides a chain of tools such as validator, optimizer, debugger, and SQL generator to significantly reduce the user’s burden in developing well-behaved programs. The framework has been fully implemented with convenient user interfaces, integrated with an off-the-shelf relational database management system, and experimented with practical benchmarks. Recent works have successfully applied BIRDS to solving different problems such as database schema co-existence, data sharing and exchange, view update program synthesis, and program resugaring.
