Unearthing the Bodies: War and Forensic Science

 This chapter examines the role of forensic science in the generation of DAC. Forensic experts play a pivotal role in investigating the manner of death of each individual who perished in war. Forensic science, which has rapidly developed since World War II, has been applied to the analysis of war casualties and has gradually begun to generate accurate data. In Argentina during the late 1970s, a civilian group was established to search for missing persons, which subsequently led to the formation of a network of forensic experts. This network subsequently played an active role in the Yugoslav Wars. The network of forensic experts formed in this way was a global one, connecting professional institutions around the world. This network played a significant role in the establishment of the ICTY and in the trials. The data generated by this network of forensic experts was instrumental in questioning the legal responsibility of those who violated international law.
