The Management of Overweight and Obese Diabetic Patient

Diverse reasons lead to overweight and obesity in diabetic patients. The causative factor could be genetic, dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle, and altered lifestyle modification. Medical therapy with oral hypoglycemic agents, weight neutral injectable molecules, and surgical interventions can be beneficial in weight loss. This weight reduction can reduce cardiovascular complications, obstructive sleep apnea, albuminuria, and progression to end-stage kidney disease. Different metrics are used to classify of overweight and obesity in Asians, and these should be applied to patients with weight gain. Strict enforcement of diet, the use of neutral or weight-losing medications, reversible medical conditions, and surgical interventions are used for reducing the morbidity and mortality in overweight and obese diabetics.
