Management of Oral Complications of Diabetes Mellitus

Periodontitis is the sixth complication of diabetes mellitus. Oral complications in patients with DM are considered major complications of the disease and can affect the patients’ quality of life. Evidence shows that chronic and persistent oral complications in these patients adversely affect blood glucose control. Thus, prevention and management of oral complications due to diabetes are considerable. The oral healthcare professional should be able to recognize these oral symptoms as part of the patient’s systemic disease rather than as isolated occurrences. Thus, it is recommended that such patients undergo regular evaluations for oral lesions and receive appropriate treatment. Dental care for patients with renal disease can be challenging due to the systemic effects of renal failure, including anemia, bleeding, and cardiovascular or endocrine diseases. However, dental management can be safe and effective with suitable treatment protocols. All clinicians caring for renal patients should make routine oral examinations a standard practice before undergoing hemodialysis or transplantation, as this can prevent endocarditis and septicemia.
