Noninvasive Prenatal Detection of Fetal Sex and RhD Blood Type

Noninvasive Prenatal Screening (NIPS) detects fetal sex and RhD blood type from maternal blood samples, offering a safe alternative to invasive procedures like amniocentesis. By isolating and amplifying fetal DNA from maternal blood, it is possible to determine the fetus’s sex and RhD status with high accuracy (over 99% sensitivity and specificity). This has clinical significance, aiding families with sex-linked genetic conditions and identifying RhD-positive fetuses needing immunoprophylaxis. NIPS’s noninvasive nature eliminates fetal and maternal harm risks associated with invasive methods. Its accuracy and safety make it promising for prenatal care, likely to become more prevalent. NIPS signs a transformative shift in prenatal care, improving outcomes for both mothers and unborn children.
