Noninvasive Prenatal Screening (NIPS) of Chromosomal Abnormalities

Noninvasive prenatal screening/testing (NIPS/NIPT) has emerged as a revolutionary approach in the field of prenatal screening, offering a safer and more accurate method to detect chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. It has high sensitivity and specificity for common aneuploidies. It has gained widespread recognition for its noninvasive nature, mitigating the risks associated with invasive procedures. NIPT is based on the detection and analysis of cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) in the maternal circulation, providing essential insights into the genetic makeup of the fetus. This is particularly effective in detecting common chromosomal aneuploidies, including Down syndrome (T21), Edwards syndrome (T18), and Patau syndrome (T13). Pretest counseling for NIPT is crucial, covering optional testing, screening nature, clinical features, technology details, report format, sensitivity, and limitations. Despite its numerous benefits, challenges such as cost and access to technology still need to be addressed for broader implementation. Ethical considerations also arise, particularly in the context of incidental findings and the potential implications of the information uncovered through prenatal genetic testing.
