Mediation in the Causal Inference Framework

This chapter introduces readers to the expanded notations of causal mediation analysis. Based on these notations, different estimands of causal mediation are presented, including natural/pure (in)direct effects, controlled direct effects, and interventional (in)direct effects. We then direct readers’ attention to the necessary assumptions for identifying these estimands.
