Introduction and Background

This opening chapter presents a brief introduction to the theoretical and practical significance of mediation analysis. To prepare readers for the subsequent chapters, this chapter also provides an overview of the Neyman-Rubin counterfactual framework for causal inference, focusing on the estimands of causal inference and the assumptions required to empirically identify these estimands.
