Assessment of Solar-Biomass Power Potential in the State of Haryana and India

With the growing demand for energy, India has witnessed a significant increase in its total installed capacity, which now stands at 408 GW. Remarkably, renewable energy sources contribute approximately 122 GW, accounting for nearly 30% of the overall installed capacity. However, when compared to the national average, the state of Haryana falls behind in terms of its renewable energy capacity, currently standing at 1301.05 MW. Consequently, this research aims to explore the potential and feasibility of implementing a solar-biomass hybrid energy system for power generation across all districts of Haryana. To evaluate the viability of this system, factors such as global solar radiation, sunshine hours, available solar land area, surplus biomass, heating values, and feed rate were considered to estimate the solar energy potential and biomass generation. Feasibility analyses were conducted using the System Advisor Model, utilizing data from all districts. The study determined the capacity potential (MW) and exploitable electricity potential (MWh) of renewable energy in Haryana. Findings revealed that Mahendragarh district possesses the highest solar potential (9.9 MW) due to its extensive wasteland area, while Panchkula district exhibits the lowest solar potential (0.37 MW). Furthermore, Karnal district showcases significant biomass production (3032.71 kt/yr), whereas Panchkula district produces the least amount of biomass power. Finally, the study compared the electricity potential of both technologies and their ability to meet the entire electricity demand of the state.
