Goodness as the Foundation: The Motivation of Goodness in Economic Activities

  • Rey-Sheng Her

摘要

This chapter looks at how altruism can be the driving force in economic activities, suggesting that a focus on goodness can yield beneficial social outcomes and long-term economic prosperity. The chapter argues that embedding altruism within capitalism can counteract its more destructive tendencies, such as environmental degradation and social inequality. It introduces the concept of the “Economy of Goodness” (EOG), which integrates altruistic motivation, process, and outcomes into all economic practices—not just those traditionally seen as charitable. By aligning economic motivations with the pursuit of collective well-being rather than mere profit, the EOG aims to foster a more harmonious society. The text explores historical and philosophical perspectives to underline the importance of replacing self-interest with altruism, citing examples from various philosophical and religious traditions that emphasize the benefits of selflessness over selfishness in both legal and economic contexts.
