IoT-Based Automatic Vehicle Safety Monitoring System in Tunnels

摘要

In modern cities, tunnels and underpasses have become very common and are essential to the proper functioning of cities. In recent times, many incidents have been reported where large vehicles such as trucks, lorries, buses, etc. get stuck in tunnels, underpasses, and under-bridges. This not only damages both the vehicle and the tunnel, however also endangers the life of the driver of the large vehicle. Also, flooding is a major problem in tunnels, this can cause vehicles such as buses to get stuck in the tunnel due to the water levels and can pose a threat to fellow passengers in the vehicle. In this paper, a smart framework for Tunnel Monitoring is proposed by using IoT devices. An IoT-based height detection system can be deployed for measuring the height of vehicles entering the tunnels and continuous measurement of water levels can be done in the tunnels. In case, the tunnel is flooded with rainwater a warning should be displayed on the entrance of the tunnel and a notification should be sent to the Municipal Corporation Department for opening up drainage. This project addresses the local problem—Monsoon flash flooding in India. We have successfully built a cost-friendly tunnel safety system and this system is superior to the pre-existing tunnel safety mechanisms in use in the world. This can effectively reduce the accident rate and improve the efficiency of tunnel construction management.
