摘要

Ophiocordyceps sinensis, a highly valued tonic food in Asia, is known for its traditional use in alleviating a wide range of ailments. This chapter summarizes current evidence on the local and traditional uses of O. sinensis, its ecogeographical distribution, agricultural cultivation, and its nutritional and bioactive components that contribute to its medicinal properties, highlighting the therapeutic potential of its mycelia and fruiting body. Existing scientific evidence over the past decade has also been critically reviewed. Most in vitro and in vivo studies have scientifically validated the traditional use of O. sinensis with reliable safety data for its consumption. More significantly, its quality varies markedly and is largely dependent on agricultural practices and cultivation methods. The growth environment is particularly important, as there have been reports of contaminated wild-type O. sinensis, leading to numerous debates on its use. This chapter highlights the significant research gap in its agricultural practices for cultivation, in addition to the therapeutic efficacy and safety of O. sinensis. Specifically, there is promising evidence for the utilization of O. sinensis as a supplemental therapy for chronic, debilitating human diseases, as well as for general health and well-being.
