Defining and Biomechanics of TBI

Globally, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health concern. Its annual impact in certain countries amounts to 2% of the population. It causes approximately two million visits to emergency rooms, of which 15% necessitate hospitalization. Despite therapeutic advancements, substantial long-term neurological deficits persist in 35% of survivors, and mortality rates remain high at 20% within this group. It is believed that this delay in achieving better outcomes is partially attributable to the limited implementation of standard treatment protocols. This chapter’s objectives are to delve deeper into the field’s history, categories, symptoms, biomechanics, and promising future directions.
