摘要

The conversion of mine tailings into alkali-activated materials (AAMs) has been considered as a viable solution for the sustainability of construction industry. This chapter reviews the physical and chemical characteristics of mine tailings, their suitability for alkali activation, and the potential applications of AAMs in construction and paste backfill technology. It also discusses the challenges of utilizing mine tailings as either inert fillers or primary precursors for AAMs, emphasizing the need for pre-treatment processes, such as mechanical and thermal activation, to enhance reactivity. Various case studies of alkali-activated copper, vanadium, and gold mine tailings are presented, highlighting their mechanical properties, durability, and environmental sustainability. The research underscores the importance of tailored binder compositions and optimized processing conditions to maximize the mechanical performance and environmental benefits of AAMs.
