Text-Based Language Learning Application

English learning is a mandatory task in today’s world to survive. The aim is to rapidly globalise and break barriers of all forms including geographical and language restrictions each day, English comes as a uniting force to tie us all together. Be it for any purpose like travelling, jobs, education, or increasing one’s knowledge, knowing English always comes in handy. The existing system is a web app for practising English conversation that is designed to utilise speech recognition technology, which is implemented using PHP and a MySQL database as referred to in Muhammad et al. (In Development of web based application with speech recognition as English learning conversation training media. IEEE, 2019 [1]). The front-end or GUI of the app is built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The technology for speech recognition allows for the processing of audio input, plus the conversion of text to speech, and vice versa. This app is ideal for individuals who want to practise their English conversation skills in a virtual environment. The proposal focuses on writing skills which are just as important as reading/conversational skills. Hence come up with the idea of a “Text-Based Language Learning App”. This proposal targets to build a website that intends to facilitate students learning English, however it has restricted users count, who already know Basic English and can navigate easily through the website. Users without any knowledge of English might find it difficult to use the website appropriately. The focus is solely on acquiring knowledge of the English language so that users do not get overwhelmed or side tracked by multiple language learning options. The purpose is to aid users with its five main features which provide the learner or user with writing assistance and an interactive community environment. The website gives users the option to post content in a precise manner as a writing exercise. It provides grammar correction and focuses on helping the user with their writing skills. It facilitates the applicant with a translation and dictionary tool to help improve the users’ understanding and vocabulary. Users can interpret from one language to another to get a deeper and clear interpretation or translation. A quiz game is provided as a way to cater for users with an interactive environment to increase their engagement and interest in the language. Users are given an all-in-one type of platform and environment for enabling their skills as they move further in their learning journey.
