Degradation of Organic Pollutants Present in Water Using Green Synthesized Carbon Quantum Dots

Accessibility to fresh, hygienic potable water and a clean-living surrounding are basic needs that facilitate a healthy life. But, the widespread and persistent use of harmful chemicals, particularly cancer-causing organic pollutants (OPs) including dyes like methyl orange, rose Bengal, malachite green, methylene blue, and other OPs like tetracycline hydrochloride, 2,4 dichlorophenol, etc., at the domestic and commercial scale has resulted in a shortage of drinking water bodies and ecological issues. It causes a significant impact on aquatic life, ecologically sound and long-term world growth, and human civilization. To solve this particular issue, scientists have concentrated on more sophisticated ways than traditional wastewater management procedures for the elimination/decontamination of harmful OPs. The photocatalytic cleaning of wastewater containing OPs utilizing green synthesized carbon quantum dots (CQDs) produced from biomass is effective, secure, and affordable method for degrading potentially dangerous organic contaminants from wastewater. The eco-friendly CQDs-based photocatalysts for the remediation of contaminated wastewater have several advantages over conventional techniques, like low cost, non-toxicity, simple components requirement, rapid reactions, simple processes, and simple further processing stages. As a result, this chapter offers a summary of recent studies on photocatalytic wastewater treatment, together with an analysis of related problems and potential solutions.
