Effective Learning Through Online Discussion—Enhancing Student Strategies and Experience

This chapter provides suggestions for students who are new to learning through Asynchronous Online Discussion (AOD). Much of the evidence underpinning the suggestions here is based upon testimony from undergraduate and postgraduate students who have shared their concerns and issues in relation to learning through AOD. We acknowledge the anxiety and doubt experienced by novices to online discussion, and advise on how to clarify expectations, incorporating advice from students who are experienced online learners. We provide specific guidelines for behaviours to aim for, and those to avoid, when participating in AOD.
