On the Influence of Confucianism

This essay chiefly discusses the social role played by Confucianism in the system of a state. In Confucianist ideals, great thinkers are called sages and politicians are called great scholars. Duke of Zhou, both a sage and a great scholar, was a model of the Confucian learning and governance. Taking the form of a conversation between King Zhao of Qin and Master Xun, this essay demonstrates the core meaning of being a Confucianist to be following the example of the great kings of former dynasties, promoting rite and morality, carrying out his responsibilities and bringing honor to his monarch. Therefore, Confucianism was always of benefit to the country no matter if a scholar was employed and whether he was in an inferior or superior position.
