Evaluation of Recycled Asphalt Pavement Materials Using Simple Characterization Methods

The utilization of Recycled Asphalt Pavements (RAP) has become increasingly prevalent due to its sustainability and cost-efficiency. However, characterizing RAP often entails time-consuming procedures that necessitate advanced material testing facilities. A Round Robin Test (RRT) orchestrated by the RILEM Technical Committee 237-SIB has yielded a novel characterization approach primarily tailored to meet the demands of new construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance involving RAP. The current study aligned with RILEM recommendations, employing basic tests such as gradation, fragmentation, and cohesion to categorize RAP sourced from various origins. The fragmentation test assesses particle resilience against impact-induced breakage, while the cohesion test offers insights into the RAP's binder activity. This investigation focused on RAP material obtained from three distinct sources and evaluated the applicability of fragmentation and cohesion tests for RAP characterization. Furthermore, the optimal temperature for maximizing binder activity in 100% RAP mixes was determined based on the test outcomes.
