Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Passenger Occupancy for Different Travel Modes in Delhi

摘要

The paper studies temporal and spatial characteristics of passenger occupancy of nine different vehicle types at eight intersection locations in the city of Delhi. The study indicates the time intervals and locations of peak mode-wise occupancies as well as the modal split of passengers for travel in different vehicle types. Out of all the travelling passengers, 46% of the passengers chose to travel by Bus and Mini-bus. The average passenger occupancy for Bus and Mini-bus is found to be rather low at 20 and 8.8 respectively. Further, the study reveals that only about 53% of carrying capacity of all vehicle types on road are being utilized by passengers for their daily commute. The study also indicates a possible reduction in road congestion by giving statistics on the percentage of cars and motorized two-wheelers going off the road, if infrastructure for buses is improved to attract higher number of passengers towards bus and mini-bus travel and commuters are incentivized to adopt car and two-wheeler pooling as a normal practice.
